Call them Americana, alt-country, alt-stringband, skewed roots or whatever, Outlaw Social from Victoria, British Columbia, Canada are now pushing to the forefront of the North American roots music scene with Appalachian singing and picking that draws on Gospel, Jug and Cajun traditions. And then some. Their repertoire includes powerful original songwriting, thoughtful interpretations of traditional music, and a few truly inspired covers of contemporary songs.

With three uniquely talented lead vocalists, from the soft, throaty murmurings of Pharis Romero on the spine tingling Methadone, to the Shape Note style hollerin’ of Oliver Swain on Country Blues, this is very much a song based band. The instrumentation is equally spectacular, played on double bass, fiddle, banjo, acoustic and electric guitar, making for a sound that is vibrant and original.

Outlaw Social includes Catherine Black, Kendel Carson, Adam Dobres, Pharis Romero and Oliver Swain, each established musicians in their own right. Members’ projects including The Duhks, The Paperboys and Chip Taylor.

If you like Gillian Welsh, Alison Krauss, Crooked Still and Uncle Earl, you’ll love this.

Kendel Carson is a singer, guitarist, fiddle player and songwriter in a country / roots / Americana vein – and at just twenty two years of age, is already one of the busiest gals in the business. She plays with the Paperboys, Outlaw Social and Chip Taylor, while squeezing in dates with her own trio, comprised of Adam Dobres on guitar and Oliver Swain on double bass. Her hit song I like Trucks has been championed by BBC Radio 2 DJ Bob Harris.
