"a bittersweet country cocktail... on the rocks"
The Mountain Firework Company are a Brighton-based six piece, built on the classic American string band line-up, but playing gorgeous, wistful, witty songs penned by lead singer Gareth McGahan who is, funnily enough, from Belfast. Drummer Grant Allardyce was born in Scotland but educated in Belfast, and is a former member of Belfast band Tamalin. The band also features English musicians Luke Smith on mandolin, Simon C Russell on double bass, Matt Oldfield on banjo and Matt Simmonds on fiddle. The members of the band came together over heartache and wine to create what's been described as "gorgeous folk/alt-country pop - equal parts darkness and cheeky humour" and "a unique mix of swamp-folk and alt country blues." They have released one album to date, “Rough guide to feeling rough,” which makes being depressed sound like fun. They also have one of the best band websites we’ve seen.
