Tonight’s Cajun Party is a highlight of our ChilliFest weekend and we’ve pulled out all the stops to bring you the undisputed Kings of Cajun.
With ten albums, several world tours and three Grammy nominations under their belt, Steve Riley and The Mamou Playboys are quite simply the best Cajun band in the world. The Cajun heritage of the band’s individual members is flawless, and their list of awards, collaborations, films and achievements is deeply impressive. This doesn’t mean that the Mamou Playboys are old though – far from it. It just means that most of them started at a shockingly young age.
Steve Riley grew up in the prairie town of Mamou where French is spoken on the street, the national holiday is Mardi Gras, and a poor family is one without a fiddler or accordion player. He joined the legendary Dewey Balfa Band at the tender age of 15, and has been the inspiration for a whole generation of young accordion players in America. Steve teamed up with David Greely, a superb fiddle player from Baton Rouge, to form the Mamou Playboys. The current line-up includes Sam Broussard on guitar, Kevin Dugas on drums and Brazos Huval on bass.
Tonight’s big ChillFest Show kicks off with some brilliant American roots music from the Grammy Award winning multi-instrumentalist Tim O’Brien plus local heroes Dermot Diamond on fiddle and Bill Whelan on banjo.
