Their mission is to “find the punk spirit” in Appalachian mountain music and Mississippi blues
The Agnostic Mountain Gospel Choir made their European debut at Open House 2006 and played three sell out shows to ecstatic audiences. As one happy Open House punter put it: “Well, what the **** can I say. Been listening to music so long I thought I heard it all UNTIL I heard … my God, the unbelievable Agnostic Mountain Gospel Choir. I have NEVER heard anything like that in my life. One of my friends turned to me when they left the stage and said: Jesus, what was that? Words will never do justice so I'll not try.”
For those who didn’t get to see them last year, the Agnostics are a four piece from Calgary in Canada, not from the mountains; they don’t sing gospel and they are not a choir, although they may very well be agnostic. Their mission is to “find the punk spirit” in Appalachian mountain music and Mississippi blues, by way of slide guitar and banjo colliding with a DIY drum kit and stand up bass. They call their sound a ‘lo-fi sonic synthesis’ and the closest comparison we can find are the roots music mutants Tom Waits and Captain Beefheart. Nice.

PLUS our favourity London DJ, Joe Balling the Jack Cushley, will be flying in to keep things low down ‘n’ dirty, before and after the Agnostics. His set celebrates the beautiful mutants created when blues ‘n’ roots music mates with punk, dance, art-rock and indie.
