"the best Irish traditional band in the world." LA Times
"a five-member Irish-American band of startling instrumental and vocal firepower.” Boston Herald
Open House has been trying to persuade this band to come to Belfast since the festival started in 1999 and now, at last, here they are to kickstart the 9th Open House Festival in style.
SOLAS, the Irish-American five-piece, have been at the cutting edge of the trad music scene for the last decade, and many have declared them the first truly great Irish band to come out of America. Lead by founding members Seamus Egan, on flute, tenor banjo, mandolin, whistle, guitar and bodhran, and fiddler Winifred Horan, the band has continually drawn from the best traditional musicians on both sides of the Atlantic. The brilliant line-up includes Mick McAuley from Kilkenny on accordion and concertina, Eamon McElholm from Tyrone on guitar and keyboards, and singer Deirdre Scanlan from Tipperary. With eight albums and a stream of accolades behind them, Solas have a formidable track record. This is their first gig in Belfast in a decade – but surely one worth waiting for.
