Geoff Harden

Open House Festival would like to extend condolences to the family and friends of Geoff Harden who died on Monday 4th September. Geoff's contribution to traditional music was considerable - he was a journalist, broadcaster, music promoter and a champion for community arts. He will be much missed.

Update on musicians and bands

The Dog Rough String will now be performing at the Bluegrass, Rockabilly and Old Time Country Jam in the John Hewitt, 9pm on Friday 29 September, in place of the billed artists.

Ed Boyd and Paul McSherry, guitar supremos, will now be joining the billed artists at the Trad With a Difference gig in McHughs on Thursday 28 September.

Michael McGoldrick has promised to join the members of Deiseal for a few tunes on Sunday 1 Oct in An Chulturlann

Irish Times review of new Jawbone album (Hauling) ****

"I've always thought there was something tragic about one-man bands - as if they couldn't get anyone else to play with them. That was until I heard the rampant ragged glory of Jawbone: detroit blues enthusiast Bob Zabor and his bass drum, top-hat, harp and guitar. Jawbone's blues are jagged missives from the frontline of his colourful life, powered by stomping rhythms, breathless harp and a cheap and nasty guitar sound. Add to that a voice of warped and fevered intensity and songs with titles such as Dose of Powder, Window Hatchet Blues and Low Dang Discount Jesus Teenage Blues, and you might get the picture. Tragic it ain't. He plays a demon version of Roger Miller's Chug a Lug, but the other 12 tracks are his own, including the excellent Reap What You Sow, Doney Holler and Jump Jump. Timeless but timely, don't expect to hear this on your radio.

Steve Cooney to join the festival line-up

The Australian born but long term Irish resident, Steve Cooney, has just been confirmed to play alongside traditional musicians Dermot Byrne and Dezi Donnelly. Steve Cooney is an extraordinary guitarist and his unique accompanist style will add an almighty punch to what was already a mouthwatering gig at the brand new Black Box concert venue on Thursday 28 Sep. Tickets are a mere £10 and the evening also features another trio - Unwanted - which features singer, Cathy Jordan, from Dervish, the one and only Seamie O'Dowd (ex Dervish) as well as another multi-instrumentalist, Rick Epping.  More details »

20th July 2006

Open House Festival was deeply shocked and saddened to hear of the very tragic news that Michéal Ó Domhnaill had unexpectedly died in his Dublin home on 8th July. Not only was Michéal a legend in Irish traditional music and an absolute gentleman to work with but he was a warm, genuine, lovable, down to earth man and a joy to know. He was a friend to both Alison and myself on one level and a musical hero on another and that was the mark of the man - hugely talented but very modest. Michéal had played the festival before during one particularly memorable night with Cathal Hayden and Mairtín O'Connor and we were looking forward to seeing him again this coming September with his friends and colleagues, Paddy Glackin and Robbie Hannan. We would like to extend our deepest condolences to all of Michéal's family. He will be very sadly missed.

BBC Live from Open House Festival launch

The 8th Open House Festival was launched, with a great deal of pomp and not much ceremony, on Tuesday 20th June 2006 in the John Hewitt pub, Donegall Street. A BBC articulated lorry parked outside the venue, in the heart of Belfast's burgeoning arts and cultural flavoured Cathedral Quarter, and from 10.30am to midday BBC Radio Ulster's Gerry Anderson show was broadcast live from the festival launch. A mouthwatering line-up of festival performers and partners played music and chatted to the man himself throughout the morning, and the great and good of Belfast's press and media mingled with festival supporters. The festival is now well and truly launched, so start booking your tickets.
