FESTIVAL FINALE:
FLOOK (ENG/IRL)
CROOKED STILL (USA)
Sunday 1st October
The Black Box
Doors 8pm Starts 8.30pm £12
Flook will be wrapping up this year’s festival with their hi-octane roots fusion of flutes and whistles (from Brian Finnegan and Sarah Allen), guitar (from Ed Boyd) and rhythms from (probably) the best bodhran player in the world (John Joe Kelly).
One of the most awarded bands in the history of trad music, the fabulous four have recently scooped yet another major accolade - Best Group at the BBC Folk Awards 2006. We hope one of them has a big mantelpiece.
We think this is the fifth time Flook have played Open House Festival, but who’s counting? What other band could deliver a comparable festival finale?
"In the US, their reputation borders on the Messianic ..."
John O Regan, Irish Music Magazine
"...keeps the ear delighted, the face grinning, the feet dancing and the heart soaring... joyous and irresistible" BBC Folk
Crooked Still was top of our list for this year’s festival when dates didn’t work out for last year. Their debut album is a warm and beautifully crafted mix of classic bluegrass and Old Timey songs and tunes, with fresh and innovative arrangements. With their youthful energy (they met at college just 5 years ago) and their individual sound of honeyed vocals, dark and moody cello and double bass, and driving melodic banjo, little wonder they have spent the last couple of years making waves in America and now in Europe. Excellent band.
“Crooked Still may be the most important folk group to emerge from Boston… State-of-the-art musical chops with a deep understanding of American traditional music’s raw melodic grace.” Boston Globe
