A HOOTENANY of old-time mountain music, traditional American folk songs,
and flatfoot dancing from the southern Appalachian Mountains featuring FOGHORN STRING BAND / IRA BERNSTEIN / RILEY BAUGUS / TIM ERIKSEN |
|
The sound of the Foghorn String Band could have come barrelling through the grille-cloth of those big console radios of the 1950’s. This is brilliantly played Appalachian barn-dance music at a feverish, energetic pitch and pace. All the way from Portland Oregan, and singing and playing in the old style, standing round one microphone, the fiddle, banjo, mandolin, double bass, guitar and four-part harmonised vocals of the Foghorns deliver a sound reminiscent of early Bluegrass, though whole-heartedly Old-Time in its powerful approach.
“A potent little jug of moonshine sure to kick-start tired feet and plant a grin on weary faces” the Oregonian.
The Foghorn String Band and guests will tour to the following venues:
Wednesday 28th September: Portstewart, Flowerfield Arts Centre
Thursday 29th September: Letterkenny, Letterkenny Arts Centre
Friday 30th September: Lisburn, Island Arts Centre
Saturday 1st October: Downpatrick, Down Arts Centre

Ira Bernstein
Ira Bernstein is the finest living exponent of traditional American flatfoot and clog dancing. He lives in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina and performs with Appalachian singer and banjo virtuoso, Riley Baugus, who is the singing voice of Brendan Gleeson in the Oscar winning film, Cold Mountain. Riley began singing and playing music at a very early age, learning from other fine musicians in the Blue Ridge Mountains such as fiddlers Kirk Sutphin and Tommy Jarrell. He is also a fine maker of
old-time, open-back banjos.
